Minecraft keeps adding new enchantments, and Density is one that a lot of players are still figuring out. If you’ve found it and aren’t sure whether it’s worth using — here’s the short version.
What Is the Density Enchantment and How Does It Work?
Density is a mace-exclusive enchantment added in the Java Edition 1.21 update. It’s built around the mace’s core mechanic — the weapon already deals bonus damage based on how far you fall before hitting an enemy. Density multiplies that bonus.
Each level adds 0.5 extra damage per block fallen, and it goes up to level 5. At max level that’s 2.5 extra damage per block of fall distance.
So at Density V:
- Fall 10 blocks → +25 bonus damage
- Fall 20 blocks → +50 bonus damage
- Fall 30 blocks → numbers that one-shot almost anything
One more thing worth knowing — when you land a hit with the mace, you take zero fall damage. Drop from any height, connect the hit, walk away unharmed. That changes everything about how aggressively you can play.
Is Density Worth It Over Other Mace Enchantments?
The mace has three main enchantment options:
- Density — scales fall damage; best for high-drop combat
- Breach — reduces enemy armor effectiveness
- Wind Burst — launches you back into the air after hitting, enabling chain attacks
Density is the best pick for raw damage when you can consistently get height above enemies. Wind Burst pairs well with it — hit, launch back up, fall again, repeat. Breach is better specifically against heavily armored targets where armor reduction matters more than fall bonus damage.
For most players, Density V is the default choice on a mace build.
How to Get Density in Minecraft
Three main ways to get it:
- Enchanting table — can roll as a random enchantment when enchanting a mace; max out bookshelves for better levels
- Enchanted books — found in chests, fishing, or villager trades; apply via anvil
- Librarian villagers — cycle trades until one offers a Density book, then lock it in
Trial chambers are also worth running — their loot chests frequently contain mace-related enchantment books. If you’re already farming trial chambers for mace drops, keep looting every chest you find.
